Photographed by Michael Burr of Birmingham.
The narrative here, I think, is that the husband has come home to find his young wife engaged in a spot of aural confession with a young priest. Her propensity for Ritualism is evidenced by the Marian statue, the candles and all the crucifixes with which she's adorned the marital home.
Entered at Stationers' Hall on 2 June 1864 as: 'Photograph of lady kneeling by gentleman in black, sitting at table etc., entitled "The Modern Confessional."'
