A carte-de-visite portrait of Pope Leo XIII (1810-1903), known as the ‘Pope of the Working Man’ and ‘The Social Pope’.
Born Count Vincenzo Gioacchino Raffaele Luigi Pecci, in 1878 he was elected the 256th Pope, succeeding Pope Pius IX. Reigning until his death at the age of 93, he was the oldest pope and had the third longest pontificate, behind Pius IX and John Paul II.
