Born in the United States, Nettie Carpenter was a former child prodigy violinist who became a well-known soloist. She had gained first prize at the Paris Conservatory and studied under Pablo de Sarasate, who was the godfather to her child from her first marriage. Sarasate had also given her a gold-embossed violin bow. Her second marriage was to the British cellist Leo Stern but the marriage ended in divorce.
