The same women appear in a companion cabinet card wearing masks and holding a piece of paper that reads 'Is marriage a failure?', a catch phrase at the end of the 1880s best understood as a response to the so-called 'New Woman' phenomenon, the rise of a form of a proto-feminism and increasing demands for female enfranchisement.
