Thomas Garnier, Dean of Winchester

Of Huguenot origins, Thomas Garnier (1776-1873) was educated at Winchester College and at Worcester College, Oxford. He was appointed Rector of Bishopstoke, Hampshire, in 1807. In 1830 he was made a prebendary of Winchester Cathedral and in 1840 he became its dean. A friend of the Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, he was a staunch Whig.

A keen botanist, in 1818 he was a founding member of the Hampshire Horticultural Society. Dean Garnier's Garden in the close of Winchester Cathedral is named after him. During the 1860's, he campaigned for a sewage system of Winchester; the road to the pumping station was later named after him.
