Luther Hinton, conductor

Although his name doesn't appear in or on this portrait, the poster gives enough information to discover that this is Luther Hinton, who conducted a London Sunday School Choir concert at the Royal Albert Hall on 16 January 1878. According to an advertisement which appeared in The Standard the day before, the event was to include '1600 voices specially selected from the members who sang at the Festival at the Crystal Palace in June 1877'.

Luther Hinton died in 1902, aged 73. According to a brief obituary in The Times (14 April 1902): 'Mr Luther Hinton, who for 24 years conducted the Crystal Palace festivals of the London Sunday School Choir, died on the 10th inst. at his residence at Southend. In 1871 he, with Jonathan Barnard, founded the London Sunday School Choir, and thousands of singers will remember his enthusiasm, his genial personality, and his whole-hearted devotion to his work'.
