A carte-de-visite portrait of the biologist Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895).
Huxley developed an interest in natural history while serving as assistant surgeon on an expedition to Australia (1846-1850). He subsequently became a staunch supporter of Darwinism. In his essays on philosophy and theology Huxley coined the term ‘agnostic’ to describe his own religious opinions.
