Fanny Janauschek

Fanny Janauschek

Born Franziska Magdalene Romance Janauschek in Prague on 20 July 1830, Fanny Janauschek enjoyed enormous success in Frankfurt, particularly in the roles of Antigone, Medea and Desdemona, before emigrating to the United States in 1867, where she proved to be equally as popular. She was particularly noted for playing Meg Merrilies, a role Charlotte Cushman made famous.

In the end, however, she died impoverished in a hospital in Brooklyn on 28 November 1904. Friends and fellow actors raised the money to have her buried properly in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.

Photographed by William R. Howell of 867 and 869, Broadway, New York.
