The photograph shows the hotel run by Mr John K. Fowler on Market Square. According to the 1861 census, Mr Fowler, aged 43, was a ‘Hotel Keeper, Wine Merchant [and] Farmer occupying 200 acres of land [and] employing 13 men and [illegible] boys’. Also present on the night of the census were his wife Mary, their two sons and seven daughters.
