Probably Eugéne Chapuis, who is listed in 1869 as one of the ballet masters at the Théâtre de la Monnaie. This portrait, however, dates from the early 1860s, at which time he would almost certainly have been a dancer at the Paris Opéra. There is also the possibility that the inscription identifying the sitter is a misspelling of Chapuy, in which case this would be the better known dancer Alfred Chapuy.
