Marchioness of Huntly

Born in 1850 at Chorlton in Lancashire, Amy Brooks was the daughter of the English barrister, banker and Conservative politician Sir William Cunliffe Brooks, afterwards 1st Baronet. In 1869 she married in Westminster Abbey the Scottish peer Charles Gordon, Marquess of Huntly. The couple lived at Aboyne Castle near Aberdeen in Scotland and at Orton Hall near Peterborough in England. The marriage produced no children.

Lady Huntly died at Orton Hall on 13 May 1920, aged 70. According to a short report in The Times (19 May 1920): ‘The body of the Marchioness of Huntly was taken from Peterborough by the Scotch express last evening for burial at Aboyne today. The first portion of the funeral service was conducted in Orton Longueville Church, Peterborough […] Messages of condolences were received from the King and from Queen Alexandra.’ According to a later report (21 May 1920): ‘The procession from Aboyne station included a detachment of six pipers, who played “The Flowers of the Forest” on the way to the graveside.’
