A carte-de-visite portrait of a fishwife from the coastal village of Newhaven selling fresh fish door to door in Edinburgh. With their distinctive striped skirts, the women of Newhaven were a familiar sight on the streets of Edinburgh and proved a popular subject among local photographers.
