Milner appears on the 1871 census living in Ilkley with his wife Nancy and their three daughters. For his profession he gave 'Card maker employing 2 men, 2 boys and one girl [and a] Photographer employing 1 man.' Ten years earlier he had described himself as a 'Card and Wire Manufacturer.'
