Born William Scott Wells at Ripon in 1856, he was the son of merchant, grocer and chandler William Wells. The family appear on the 1881 census living at 8 Old Market Place in Ripon. William Wells described himself as a ‘Wine Merchant, Grocer, Mineral Water and Candle Manufactor [sic] and JP for County of Ripon.’ Scott, aged 24, gave his profession as ‘Grocer’s Assistant.’
He died in the September ¼ of 1884, aged only 28.
