Born in 1815, Bartle John Laurie Frere was baptised at Roydon near Diss in Norfolk on 11 September 1815. He was the son of solicitor George Frere and his wife Elizabeth Raper Grant.
He became the head of a well-known law firm in Lincoln's Inn Fields and a president of the Law Society. His London residence was 46, Bedford Square. On the death of his father in 1854 he inherited Twyford House, a large Queen Anne mansion at Bishop Stortford in Hertfordshire.
On 12 June 1862 at St John's Church in Hampstead he married Adelaide Ellen Rowe, third daughter of Richard Rowe of Kilburn. The marriage produced at least one son and three daughters (1871 census).
Bartle John Laurie Frere died of pneumonia, aged 78, on 25 January 1893, and was buried in the churchyard at Thorley, Hertfordshire. He left an estate valued at £114,392.
