Unidentified dog

A carte-de-visite portrait of a pet dog sitting beside, presumably, his owner's furled umbrella and ostrich feather reticule.

Charles Hoole operated a photographic studio on Clarkehouse Road in southwest Sheffield, although on later censuses he described himself as an 'Artist, Portrait Painter.' When he died, aged 71 in Sheffield in 1905, he left an estate valued at £14,399, which suggests his endeavours met with some success. His father, James Hoole, a retired butcher, had left an estate worth £5478 when he died in 1882, so only part of Charles's fortune had been inherited. His son Bernard Hobson Hoole, born in 1870, became an accountant.

Evidence elsewhere in the album suggests it was compiled by the photographer's cousin, Edith Hoole, daughter of tea merchant and grocer Charles Hoole, who ws a brother of the photographer's father.
