The Bishop of Exeter at 89

The Bishop of Exeter at 89

A carte-de-visite showing Henry Phillpotts, the Bishop of Exeter, ‘in his 90th Year with his six Sons,’ according to a caption in the lower margin.

‘THE BISHOP OF EXETER — The parish of Lawhitton, near Launceston, was the scene of great rejoicing on Monday, it being the day on which his lordship, the Bishop of Exeter, entered on his 90th year. The Rev. F. Du Bonlay, rector of the parish (son-in-law of the Bishop) in celebrating the day showed kindness to the old and young. He gave a dinner at the Manor House Inn to about sixty of the old inhabitants of the parish, and subsequently provided a tea for all the school children in the lawn of the rectory, various sports following’ (Western Daily Press, 10 May 1867).

Phillpotts died on 18 September 1869 at the age of 91.

Photographed by Walter Bradnee of Torquay in Devon.

Entered at Stationers’ Hall — an essential part of the copyright process — on 21 May 1867.
