A donkey in the studio

An inscription on the back of the mount identifies the two children in the baskets as Edith and Gertrude Davies, and gives the date, 5 May 1870. These are two of the three children of Richard E. E. Davies, an atttorney and solicitor of Swansea in Wales. Their grandfather was Samuel Davies, Vicar of Oystermouth.
