Alfred Shaw


A carte-de-visite portrait of the eminent cricketer and rugby player Alfred Shaw (1842-1907), who bowled the first ball in Test cricket and was the first to take five wickets in a Test innings. His first class career extended from 1864 to 1897.

Shaw played cricket on two trips to North American and two to Australia. He also organised the first British Isles rugby tour to Australasia in 1888.

Born at Burton Joyce in Nottinghamshire, most of his matches were for Nottinghamshire. He died at Gedling in Nottinghamshire on 16 January 1907.
