Anthony Trollope

Anthony Trollope

A carte-de-visite portrait of Anthony Trollope (1815-1882), the author who delineated English provincial middle-class society and domestic relationships in his Barchester series of novels. The series began with The Warden (1855) and includes Barchester Towers (1857), Doctor Thorne (1858) and The Last Chronicle of Barset (1867).

His other great novel-series, the Palliser novels, paints an unrivalled portrait of Parliamentary political society in the high-Victorian period.

For a large part of his adult life, Trollope continued to work as a civil-servant for the British post office, a successful career which included the introduction of the post box.
