Alexander Forbes, Bishop of Brechin


A carte-de-visite portrait of the Scottish divine Alexander Penrose Forbes (1817-1875). Educated at Haileybury College and Brasenose College, he was at Oxford during the early years of the Tracterian movement and it was there that he was came under the influnce of Newman, Pusey and Kemble. Appointed to the see of Brechin in 1847, he was prosecuted in the church courts for heresy 1857 due to his views on the nature of the Eucharist but was acquitted with a censure and an admonishment.

He died at Dundee on 8 October 1875.
