A topographical carte-de-visite showing a view of the entrance to Aquarium in Brighton. Opened in 1872, it is the oldest operating aquarium in the world.
In the background, the Chain Pier is clearly visible. Built in 1823 as a landing stage for packet boats from Dieppe, it was destroyed by a storm in 1896, though it was already closed and decrepit by then.
