Cardinal Manning

Cardinal Manning

A carte-de-visite portrait of Cardinal Henry Edward Manning (1808-1892).

An English priest, and one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement which sought to revive ritualism, Manning converted to Roman Catholicism in 1851. In 1865 he became Archbishop of Westminster; he was created a cardinal in 1875.

Photographed by R.W. Thrupp of 66 New Street, Birmingham.

Robert White Thrupp was originally in partnership with Napoleon Sarony but when Sarony moved to New York, Thrupp continued the studio on his own. By 1883 he had moved to London. He died in Worthing on 3 April 1907, leaving an estate valued at £73,386
