Nicholas Crawford Ross was born in or about 1845 at Castlecomer in County Kilkenny in Ireland. At the time of the 1881 census, he was serving as surgeon aboard the Decoy. In 1886 he was promoted Staff Surgeon in 1886 and appointed to the Penguin in the same year.
He died at sea on 7 June 1886, aged 41, and was buried at Aden.
