Duchess of Teck and child

Duchess of Teck and child

A carte-de-visite portrait of Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge. She was known as the Princess of Cambridge until her marriage, after which she was known first as the Princess of Teck (1866-1871) and then as the Duchess of Teck (1871-1897). Enormously popular with the British public, she was also affectionately known as 'Fat Mary'.

Her eldest child was May of Teck, who became the wife of George V and is better known as Queen Mary. The baby in this portrait is either Prince Adolphus (born 1868), Prince Francis (born 1870) or Prince Alexander (born 1874). The fact that the inscription calls Mary Adelaide the 'Duchess of Teck' is no guide since it may not necessarily have been added at the time that the portrait was purchased.

Photographed by William and Daniel Downey of London and Newcastle.
