Born in 1835, George Henry Finch was the son of George Finch of Burley Hall in Rutland. Although he had no title himself, his grandfathers were the Earl of Nottingham and the Duke of Beaufort. In 1867 he became the Conservative MP for Rutland, a seat he held on to for the next 39 years, becoming 'Father of the House' of Commons.
He died on 27 May 1907, leaving an estate valued at £28, 273.
From an album compiled in the 1860s by his cousin Augustus Gough-Calthorpe, 6th Baron Calthorpe. Almost all the photographs in the album have the name of the photographer neatly and carefully noted beneath the print on the album page, but in this case the photographer is unfortunately unidentified. The portrait is, however, dated 12 January 1861.
