A carte-de-visite showing two medals, one the Peninsula medal awarded to all soldiers who fought in Spain and Portugal during the Napoleonic Wars and the other the Waterloo medal awarded to those who saw action at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
A pencilled inscription verso in a period hand reads: 'Tunnicliffe'. This is Private George Tunnicliffe of the 95th Regiment of Foot (1st Battalion) whose name appears on the medal rolls for both the Peninsula medal and the Waterloo medal. His Peninsula medal has an impressive 12 bars naming the various engagements in which he saw action.
