A carte-de-visite showing the grave of James Appleby, who died on 13 July 1887, aged 11.
His parents were William and Margaret Appleby of Barnard Castle in County Durham. William, born 1841 in Barnard Castle, was a stone mason, according to the 1871 census, so he probably carved this monument to his son. At the time of the 1881 census, he gave 'Mason and Local Met[hodist] Preacher' as his profession and in 1891 he described himself as a 'Builder'.
According to the 1881 census, William and Margaret's other children were: Mary, aged 17, an unemployed milliner; Joseph, aged 16, an unemployed bookkeeper; Emma Jane, aged 14; and Robert William, aged 10. James was the youngest in the family.
