Lord March

A small albumen print portrait of Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox (1845-1928), eldest son of the 6th Duke of Richmond.

He was styled Lord Settrington from birth and was then known as Lord March after his father inherited the dukedom in 1860. He in turn became the 7th Duke of Richmond and Lennox in 1903.

Educated at Eton between 1859 and 1863, he subsequently joined the Grenadier Guards, although he retired in 1869 after he was elected MP for West Sussex. He represented that constituency until it was abolished for the 1885 general election, when he was returned to the House of Commons for the Chichester constituency, a seat he held until 1889.

He married firstly Amy Mary, daughter of Percy Ricardo of Bramley Park in Guildford. They had three sons and two daughters. After her death in August 1879, aged 30, he married secondly Isabel Sophie, daughter of William George Craven, in 1882. They had two daughters. The second Lady March died in November 1887, aged only 24. Lord March remained a widower until his death.

He died on 18 January 1928 and was buried in Chichester Cathedral. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Charles.
