A pencilled inscription on the back of this albumen print identifies this as 'Milton's Mulberry Tree, Cambridge'.
Planted in 1608, the year of the poet's birth, the tree stands in Fellows' Garden at Christ's College, Cambridge.
The photographer is identified in the negative as 'Cade' at the right-hand edge of the image. This is probably Robert Cade of Ipswich, who specialised in photographing the buildings and equipment of country estates during the 1850s, before he moved into portraiture and opened his first studio in Ipswich.
