Mrs Orde-Powlett's daughters

Mrs Orde-Powlett (née Annie Martha Topham) was the wife of the Honourable Amias Charles Orde-Powlett (1828-1899), a grandson of the 1st Baron Bolton of Bolton Castle. The couple were married in 1852 and had six children, one of whom died in infancy. The 1871 census shows them living at Ainderby Hall in Yorkshire with their five surviving children: Florence (17), Amy (13), Letitia (11), Amias (9) and Georgina (7). This photograph was probably taken in the late 1860s or early 1870s but it’s still difficult to say which of the four girls are seen here; probably Letitia and Georgina, I think. Their father described himself as a ‘magistrate and Deputy Lieutenant, farms 100 acres, Landowner employ[ing] 2 men.’ The household included four female servants, a butler, a groom, plus a governess and a lady’s maid. A Roman Catholic priest was also present on the night of the census.

Photographed by Joseph Raine of Richmond, Yorkshire.
