From an album compiled in the 1860s by Augustus Gough-Calthorpe, 6th Baron Calthorpe, the sitter is identified only as 'Peggy Finch'. Evidence elsewhere in the album, however, makes it possible to identify her more fully.
Born Magdalen Louisa Finch in London in 1862, her father was George Henry Finch of Burley Hall near Oakham in Rutland (now in Leicestershire). Among her immediate antecedents were the 4th Earl of Nottingham and the 6th Duke of Beaufort. She appears on the 1871 census living at Burley Hall with her widowed father, her brother Alan George Finch and her younger sister Gwendoline Harriett Finch. She never married and died at Burley Hall in 1935, aged 73.
