Edward Joseph Rose was born on 15 February 1818. He was educated at Rugby and Trinity College, Cambridge. He graduated B.A. in 1841 and M.A. in 1844. He was ordained a deacon in 1841 and a priest in 1842. From 1845 to 1855 he was Curate of Dalby-on-the-Wolds in Leicestershire. In 1855 he was appointed Rector of Webridge in Surrey, a post he held until his death in 1882. He died on 3 July 1882.
