A portrait of Claude Bowes-Lyon, 13th Earl of Strathmore, seen here with the fourth of his seven sons, the Honourable Herbert Bowes-Lyon.
Born on 15 August 1860, Herbert became a practising barrister. He never married. He died, aged only 36, on 14 April 1897 at his villa at Bordighera in Italy. According to the
Dundee Courier (26 April 1897), ‘The deceased had been in failing health for a considerable period, and, indeed, it is largely due to this cause that Lord and Lady Strathmore have resided so much abroad of recent years.’ His body was brought back to Glamis and buried there on 24 April 1897.
By the time he died, aged 79, on 16 February 1904, the Earl had buried four of his ten children.
