The anatomy room at Edinburgh University

A gelatin silver print showing the anatomy room at Edinburgh University around 1898.

The man seated on the stool near the centre of the photograph is possibly Professor William Rutherford, who taught Arthur Conan Doyle when he attended the university in the early 1880s and who later served as the model for Professor George Edward Challenger in Conan Doyle's The Lost World and other adventures.

The print, which is mounted on an album page, measures 4.4" by 6" (11.1 cm by 15.3 cm).

Photographer unidentified.
