Born at Cambridge in 1824, James Katterns was the son of William Katterns, a carpenter. On 25 December 1843 at All Saints in Northampton he married Louisa Fisher, an illiterate laundress. In 1851 Katterns was living in Northampton and working as a shoe maker. By 1861 he had established himself as a photographer. He died, aged 67, on 26 July 1890 at 14 Mare Street in Northampton, leaving a personal estate valued at £639.
