A carte-de-visite portrait of a baby in finely upholstered pushchair, identified as Charles William Hylton Molyneux, son of the 4th Earl of Sefton. Born in London on 25 June 1867, he succeeded his father in 1897, becoming the 5th Earl of Sefton. He died unmarried on 2 December 1901, aged only 34, at Croxteth Hall, Croxteth Park, near Liverpool.
According to his obituary in the Times (3 December 1901): ‘The late earl met with a bad accident in the hunting field before he succeeded to the title, which affected him both mentally and physically. Some months ago his condition grew worse and on Friday he became unconscious.’ He was succeeded by his brother, the Hon Osbert Cecil Molyneux.
