Alfred Worthington was born in Kent in 1835 and came to Aberystwyth on the advice of his doctor in about 1870. He died at the age of 89 in 1925. He worked as a photographer for several years, but also established himself as an artist, producing many hundreds of oil paintings for both the local and the tourist markets. He also painted pictures on slate for fireplaces and other items that were enameled at one or more of the Slate Enameling works in Aberystwyth.
