A carte-de-visite portrait of Général Charles Guillaume Cousin-Montauban (1796-1878), comte de Palikao, who commanded the French forces in China (1860). His title was bestowed after his victory at Pa-li-ch’iao near Peking. At the start of the Franco-Prussian War he replaced Ollivier as premier (August 1870) under the regency of the Empress Eugénie. The capture of Napoléon III as Sedan was followed by a bloodless revolution in Paris, and Palikao fled to Belgium.
