An inked inscription verso in a period hand identifies the sitter and gives the date of her death.

Born in London in or about 1821, Louisa Sinclair was the daughter of Peter Sinclair. On 29 March 1844 at Bolton-le-Moors in Lancashire she married civil engineer Alexander James Adie.

Her husband's name appears in various newspaper reports during the 1850s and 1860s. He was at that time working for the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Company.

The couple lived in house called 'Rockview' at Linlithgow in Scotland. Alexander died there on 3 April 1879, leaving an estate valued at £38,414.

Louisa died at the same address on 21 June 1896, leaving an estate valued at £12,460.
