Evelyn Frederica Capel

Evelyn Frederica Capel

Born on 12 June 1860 at 25 Prince’s Square in Paddington, Evelyn Frederica Capel was baptised at St Stephen’s, Paddington, on 20 July 1860. She was the daughter of Arthur Risdon Capel and Mary Anne Jemima née Carnegy. Her father, a tea broker, was for many years the Treasurer of the London Orphan Asylum at Watford; he later changed his name to Arthur Risdon Capel Carnegy Arbuthnott when his wife came into possession of the estates of Balnamoon and Findowrie through the death of her sister in 1892.

In 1894 she married Constantine Albert Ionides of the London Stock Exchange. Their marriage produced three children. Born at Pera in Constantinople on 24 August 1863 and educated at Balliol College, Oxford, Constantine was a Naturalised British Subject. He was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1886 but had later become a stockbroker. His grandfather, Alexander Constantine Ionides, amassed an important collection of paintings, which his son, Constantine Alexander Ionides, left to the Victoria and Albert Museum when he died in 1900.

Evelyn and her family appear on the 1911 census, living at 10 Second Avenue in Hove. The household included six servants.

Constantine died there, aged 52, on 5 January 1916, leaving an estate valued at £127,990.

Mrs Evelyn Frederica Ionides died, aged 75, at the same address on 29 March 1936. She left an estate valued at £28,472.
