Mary Ann Carnegy Arbuthnott Capel


Mary Ann Carnegy Arbuthnott Capel was baptised on 11 December 1855 at Holy Trinity, Paddington.

She was the daughter of Arthur Risdon Capel and Mary Anne Jemima née Carnegy. Her father, a tea broker, was for many years the Treasurer of the London Orphan Asylum at Watford; he later changed his name to Arthur Risdon Capel Carnegy Arbuthnott when his wife came into possession of the estates of Balnamoon and Findowrie through the death of her sister in 1892.

In 1901 she was living with her widowed mother at Balnamoon near Menmuir in Angus.

She died unmarried on 5 June 1916 at 31 Longbridge Road, Earl’s Court.

According to the Western Morning News (16 August 1916), ‘Miss Mary Ann Carnegy Arbuthnott Capel, formerly of Summerlease House, Bude [Cornwall], who died June 5th, left estate of the gross value of £19,264, and bequeathed £500 to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, £100 to the East London Church Fund, £100 to the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge, and £100 to the St James’s Diocesan Home, Fulham, S.W.’
