Archibald McArthur, aged103

A cabinet card portrait of Archibald McArthur, seen here at the age of 103, with his daughter, aged 73, and his granddaughter, aged 56. A caption printed in the lower margin gives the details under the heading: 'The oldest man in Scotland, residing at Manse Road, Dunoon.'

An inked inscription verso in a period hand reads; 'I have been to-day to see the old people, in a little old straw thatched cottage. In addition to the three in the picture there was a son of the old man, in his 70th year, a strong healthy looking man. Dunoon, July 22nd 1880.'

'Mr Archibald McArthur, the oldest man in Scotland, died on Wednesday at Dunoon, Argyllshire. He was born at Kilmorich, in the same county, September 5, 1777, and retained his faculties to the last' (Nottingham Journal, 28 October 1881).

Photographed by Stephen Chalmers of Dunoon, Argyllshire.
