Sydney H. Thorp

Sydney H. Thorp

An inked inscription verso in a period hand reads: 'Copy of what is written on the back of the original carte from which this is taken. / Taken by a travelling photographer at Warenda Q'land / Oct. 12th 1884 / Sydney H. Thorp.'

According to Wikipedia: 'Warenda is an outback locality in the Shire of Boulia, Queensland, Australia. In the 2021 census, Warenda had "no people or a very low population".'

There is a Sydney Hood Thorp who was born in India on 12 October 1862, the son of Edward Courtnay Thorp. On 28 November 1890 he applied for a patent for 'An improved apparatus for affixing adhesive postage stamps.' He's described as 'of Charters Towers, in the colony of Queensland, sharebroker.' He died in Queensland, Australia on 9 September 1926. He was buried in Belgian Gardens Cemetery, Belgian Gardens, Townsville City, Queensland, Australia. Find A Grave has a photograph of his (rather imposing) headstone.

Photographer(s) unidentified.
