A carte-de-visite portrait of two Newhaven fishwives.
With their striped skirts and their 'picturesque' bonnets, the women of Newhaven, a small fishing community near Edinburgh, proved an early and popular subject with local photographers.
Photographed by Ross and Thomson of Edinburgh.
A printed caption recto in the lower margin gives the title. According to another, the image was registered in 1863.
