A carte-de-visite portrait of Arthur Mills (1817-1898), the Member of Parliament for Exeter.
On 3 August 1848 he married Agnes Lucy Acland (1822-1895), daughter of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland (1787-1871), 6th Baronet, and from 1837 to 1857, Member of Parliament for North Devon.
The couple appear on the 1851 census, visiting Mrs Mills' father at Killerton House, Broadclyst, Devon, with their one-year-old son, Francis Arthur Mordaunt Mills. Arthur Mills gave his age as 34, so he was born in 1817. His place of birth was Barton, in Warwickshire.
Two other sons, Barton Reginald Vaughn Mills, aged 3, and Dudley Acland Mills, aged 1, appear on the 1861 census, staying with their maternal grandfather at Killerton House, Broadclyst, Devon.
Arthur Mills and his wife, Lucy, appear on the 1871 census, living at 34 Hyde Park Gardens, London. He gave 'Magistrate' as his profession.
Arthur Mills died on 12 October 1898.
