A carte-de-visite portrait of Captain Augustus Edmund Warren of the 78th (Highland) Regiment of Foot (or Russ-shire Buffs).
According to Hart’s Army List (1860), Warren joined the army as an Ensign on 2 February 1848. He became a Lieutenant (by purchase) on 5 November 1852 and was promoted Captain on 20 July 1855.
According to the additional notes: ‘Captain Warren served with the 82nd Regt. at the siege of Sebastopol from 2nd Sept. 1855 (Medal and Clasp). Also in the Indian Campaign of 1857-59, and was present at the relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde, defeat of the Gwalior Contingent at Cawnpore, action of Khodagange, and occupation of Futtehghur – acting successively as Orderly Officer to Brigadier Russell, Col. Hale, and Sir John Inglis: served the Rohileund campaign, including the defence of the Jail and subsequent operations in Shahjehanpore, and actions of Khankur and Bunkagaon (Medal and Clasp)’.
