François-Auguste-Ferdinand Donnet (1795-1882) was ordained in 1819. In 1837 he was appointed Archbishop of Bordeaux and in 1852 he was created a cardinal. He used his influence in favour of the pope, the liberty of teaching, and the repression of the irreligious press. At the Vatican Council he openly sided with the Ultramontanes.
