Born in 1829 at Leek in Staffordshire, Charles Challinor appears on the 1861 census living at The Lodge in Stoke-upon-Trent with his wife Lettice and their three daughters. By profession, he was a farmer of 26 acres and also an earthenware manufacturer; he employed 350 hands.
In 1881 he was living at Basford Hall in Wolstanton, Staffordshire. He now described himself as a ‘Manufacturer and Colliery Proprietor’. The household included 5 daughters, 4 sons, and 5 servants, with a coachman and his family living in a nearby cottage.
According to one website, Charles Challinor (1829-1893), had interests in Glebe Colliery, Fenton Pottery, Baker and Co., Railway Stilt Works, Fenton Tileries and various flint and stone mills.
He died at Glebe Colliery in Fenton on 12 February 1893 when he was crushed by a pumping engine while examining machinery. He was 64 years old. His estate was valued at £65,965.
