Colonel H.C.C. Owen

Colonel Henry Charles Cunliffe Owen served in the Royal Engineers and lost his left leg in the Crimean War at the Siege of Sebastopol. He had previously been General Superintendent for the Great Exhibition of 1851. After the war he became Assistant Inspector-General of Fortifications at the War Office in October 1855; Deputy Inspector-General of Fortifications 1856-60; and Commanding Royal Engineer of the Western District in 1862.

He died on 7 March 1867 as a result of a chill contracted whilst inspecting defence works. He is commemorated by a stained-glass window in St James's Church, Plymouth.
